Groundwater quality and geothermal energy. The case of Cerro Prieto Geothermal Field, Mᅢᄅxico
نویسندگان
چکیده
The influence of the Cerro Prieto Geothermal Field (CPGF) on groundwater quality of the close-by agricultural area was evaluated by means of chemical and isotopic determinations. According to irrigation standards, concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Crtot, Cr(VI), Cu, Cd, Hg, B in agricultural wells showed the suitability of the water for irrigation. Iron was below irrigation limits in all but one well. However, chloride levels were above those limits in 83 out of 87 collected samples. Isotopic determinations of d2H, d18O, d34S, d13C, and spatial concentration trends of elements related with geothermal brines and toxic metals and metalloids did not indicate an influence of the CPGF to groundwater in the nearby agricultural area. Isotopic values of d2H, d18O showed the occurrence of evaporation processes and infiltration of canal’s irrigation water to geothermal water reservoirs and to groundwater in the agricultural zone. High chloride concentrations might be associated with these processes. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

App1,ication of a Lumped Parameter Model to the Cerro Prieto Geothermat, Field
In this paper, a lumped parameter mathematical model for hot water geothermal reservoirs is developed and applied to the Cerro Prieto geothermal field in Mexico. The production and pressure histories of Cerro Prieto were assembled from field data. A computer program was then used to perform sensitivity studies on reservoir size, porosity, aquifer recharge, and temperature of recharge fluid. Two...
متن کاملProspecting for geothermal energy through satellite based thermal data: Review and the way forward
Geothermal investors need to be confident with the methods and results of exploration programs. Also cutting the upfront cost of geothermal exploration will further encourage investors to consider investment in this emerging clean energy field. Hence, it is of paramount importance to improve prospecting techniques in order to explore where economic concentrations of geothermal energy are to be ...
متن کاملChemical-Isotopic Evidences for the Origin and Evolution of Geothermal Fluids at the Las Tres Vírgenes Geothermal Field, B.C., NW-Mexico
The Las Tres Vírgenes (LTV) geothermal reservoir is a liquid-dominated resource located in the Baja California Peninsula (NW-Mexico) with a currently installed power capacity of 10 MWe. The sustainability of future electricity production at the LTV geothermal field raises concerns about the origin and hydraulic dynamics of exploited geothermal fluids. As part of the present study, water samples...
متن کاملL Thermodynamic Classification of Geothermal Systems
A thermodynamic approach is presented to classify geothermal reservoir as vapor or liquid dominated. According to it, the vapor dominated reservoir has specific volume of fluid (i.e. combined vapor and liquid) greater than the critical volume of water whereas the liquid dominated reservoir has lesser specific volume. Enthalpy is not a conservative entity in a geothermal system. Apart from it, t...

New energy technologies, along with the benefits, are associated with challenges and Difficulties. Geothermal energy as one of the renewable energies is a clean and sustainable energy source, yet its development still has some impact on the environment such as: greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, surface and groundwater contamination, subsidence, and seismicity. This paper provides a bri...
